The Optimist is a five part play designed to illustrate the proposition that college professors are, at the very least, eccentric.  The characters include a history professor who believes he is the 21st century version of England's King Henry VIII and a philosophy professor who believes that logic solves all the world's problems from the political to the personal.  Then, again, maybe eccentric is too mild a word.
